They're against it because it's not a question of math, or even cost, for most Americans. There's a strong current of, "I got mine; so you get yours" in American culture. We think universal healthcare means the government digs into the pockets of responsible (aka healthy) people so it can give a free ride to the sick and lazy.
People will read this post and say, "Why should I pay 2K when I'm not even sick? That money is just being wasted on people who are gaming the system! I'm not paying for someone's diabetes medication who eats McDonald's all day! At least I know the 8K would be taking care of me and my family."
And the savings for businesses. Why should an auto business have to dedicate money and staff to coordinate healthcare? Why should school taxes have to dedicate money and staff to coordinate healthcare? And back to someone's point about private healthcare - if private healthcare is so much better, why are they afraid of the competition?
People are so against it primarily due to the primary populous of America being allergic to anything remotely Communist. It just so happens that universal/public healthcare is a socialist idea.
They don't think farther than that.
Welcome to America-where Wendy’s had to discontinue the 1/3 lb burger because Americans thought it was smaller then a 1/4 lb burger.
A New York grand jury indicted Luigi Mangione on charges of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office said Tuesday.
Mangione, 26, is charged with one count of first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism and two counts of second-degree murder, one of which is charged as killing as an act of terrorism.
They pulled that off faster than any insurance approval/denial I've had. Imagine.
Killing the wealthy is terrorism, when they kill the poor it isn't even a crime.
UHC put a broken robot in charge of picking who lives and who dies and then left it in charge despite the knowledge it was wrong 90% of the time.
They let it kill people for money.
That's criminally negligent homicide AT A MINIMUM.
And if the CEO of UHC had been in prison serving 10 consecutive life sentences for all the pain, suffering, and death he caused, he would still be alive right now.
Just more evidence that it’s a class war. They kill hundreds of thousands of us, and they get paid handsomely for it. We kill one of them and get charged with terrorism.
What's crazy is that this guy is being charged as a terrorist and yet school shooters are not...
If the killing of UHC's CEO Brian Thompson underscores anything about our government and institutions it's that we in the US live in a stratified society of classes, where the top 1% get special treatment/benefits from the government, law enforcement, courts etc, while the rest of us rabble get squat.
The US is the only wealthy country in the world without universal health care.
All first world countries have national health care systems except the United States. 33 of 34 first world countries solved the problem decades ago. As long as the political class continues to accept money from the insurance lobby nothing will change, money talks and good governance walks.
The rich CEO’s & board of directors work with Congress to ensure profit over people… which means no universal healthcare.
The last serious attempt in this country to move to a Universal Healthcare Coverage model was spearheaded by Hilary Clinton during Bill's first term. It never went anywhere because the Republicans (at the time) were bought off by the Insurance lobby.
The next serious attempt was during Obama 1, and the Republicans and their Insurance Lobby friends stacked town halls with paid agitators who shouted "Death Panels! Socialized Medicine! Keep Government out of my body!" these kinds of things. Poor little Claire McCaskill was a Dem Senator from Missouri, and I think CNN broadcasted her Town Hall which was an embarrassing shit show.
We simply have too many dumb Republican voters in this country to ever get real change.
Find progressive politicans who will run for office and not be bought off by the Insurance Industry, and vote them in.
Too many dumbshit people in the country buy in to Trump's election sloganeering and insults and empty promise of "I'll make it all better" when all he's doing is stacking government with pals who will grift while they're in office, and then he'll fire them when the grifting gets too obnoxious, or when something bad happens on their watch -- that will trigger a Trump You're Fired phone call.
This is the America that the Republicans want, and even when tragedy and medical bankruptcy approaches, they still vote Republican come election time.
They are so predictable, we knew this would be their response. They are literally incapable of criticizing him or holding him accountable to the shit he says he will do.
This is like the least surprising thing. How could you have experienced Trump, round 1 and not expected this?
That whole "show me where" from the "do your own research" people is pretty rich.
I got the "show me where he said anything racist" the same day he was talking about DEI reparations for white people. It's a tight bubble and it's getting smaller.
Donald Trump acts like he invented the word “groceries.” He credits talking about “groceries” for his win in the presidential election, and he managed to trick enough Americans into voting for him by telling them he would lower the cost of these mysterious things called groceries. (Rich people don’t need to understand groceries. They just push a button and someone brings them snacks and meals.)
President-elect Donald Trump admitted in an interview with Time magazine that it will be difficult for him to reduce consumer prices, contrary to statements he made on the campaign trail this year.
Trump told Time in an hourlong interview for its “Person of the Year” feature that his presidency wouldn’t be a failure if he failed to bring the price of groceries down.
“I’d like to bring them down. It’s hard to bring things down once they’re up. You know, it’s very hard. But I think that they will,” Trump said, according to the transcript.
The new poll shows the highest level of support in a decade for the government ensuring all Americans have healthcare.
Public sentiment regarding the nation's for-profit healthcare system—an outlier among wealthy nations—has dominated the national news in recent days following last week's killing of an insurance executive in New York.
On Monday, just hours before a suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was arrested by police, a new Gallup poll found a 62% majority in the U.S. believe the government should ensure all Americans have healthcare coverage—the highest percentage in more than a decade.
Then why did they vote for trump?
Or does this percentage contain a large number of idiots that didn't vote?
Kiss your healthcare goodbye if you didn't vote or voted for trump.
When they were on about the death panels and socialism in Obama care back in the day 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ My fellow Americans are dumb asses. I hate to say it.
America is the land of "It can never happen here!" because we're just too damn big and special. People feel comfortable with the idea that our systems will always be upheld, and that we will always be provided for.
I think the majority of the American electorate is about to be very unpleasantly surprised.
While Trump still has “concepts of a plan” for healthcare, I’m sure the GOP lead congress will do everything in its power to try and repeal Obamacare again.
Everyone needs health coverage, not health insurance. Health insurance should never be a thing.
32 out of the top 33 developed nations have nationalized healthcare.
Right-wing lawmaker Marjorie Taylor Greene says she will expose “sexual harassment and assault claims” against her fellow Republicans if the House Ethics Committee releases their “highly damaging” report on Matt Gaetz.
Representative Greene of Georgia defended Gaetz, Trump’s pick for attorney general, on Tuesday morning. She warned that “if we are going to release ethics reports and rip apart our own that Trump has appointed,” she will “put it ALL out there.”
Matt Gaetz resigned from Congress to prevent the scathing House ethics committee report from being released.
It was inappropriate for speaker Mike Johnson to speak to the ethics committee chair and tell him they should not release the ethics report.
There is precedent for releasing reports after a Congress person resigns. There is only one reason they do not want this report see the light of day. It is damning and Republicans do not want the public to see that someone who committed crimes has been nominated by Trump as the next Attorney General to lead law-enforcement.
It sums up the current status of the republican party well. Criminal and lawless. And definitely without ethics.
Reminder that Donald Trump was found to be a sexual abuser by a jury of his peers in May 2023. Then, when Trump twice appealed the ruling claiming he was “only” a sexual abuser and not rapist, the judge twice clarified that he was a rapist according to the common and federal law definitions of rape.

Donald Trump is spending part of his Sunday afternoon behind the counter at a Pennsylvania McDonald’s. The former president, who has frequently said he loves the chain’s food, donned an apron to work the fry machine and hand food to customers at the drive thru. It’s an attempt to bring attention to his unfounded allegations that his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, did not work there during college.
When asked why he wanted to come to the fast food restaurant, Trump responded, “I like McDonalds. I like jobs. I like to see good jobs and I think it’s inappropriate when someone puts down that they worked at McDonalds… She [Harris] never worked at McDonalds.”
So Trump is basically mocking a person that had a job at McD’s as a youth. Man that’s pathetic. Because it’s literally what people are supposed to do.
Does McDonald's hire convicted felons?
The place wasn’t even open. It was all staged and fake. He didn’t work for real at a McDonalds. More Fraud and deception like usual. Read the letter: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GaW4GHuXEAAbclQ.jpg
A Union members voting for Trump is like the roaches voting for Raid.
A Union Members voting for Trump is like a Watermelon voting for Gallagher.
What moron would think a spray-tanned, Manhattanite trust-funded, casino-bankrupting pretend-playboy that refuses to pay his bills would be a friend to the American working class?
This should be placed next to every speaking event this guy does for the remainder of the month when he goes off claiming that the White House isn't trying to help Florida.
This is the MAGA/GOP long standing plan to "prove" the Government is broken.
If you can't starve it, just ignore their calls to help your citizenry
They're sick, but 99% sure it will work with the MAGA faithful, they'll still blame the dems/gov't for not receiving aid.
DeSantamonious and Trump, and his other political hacks want the fallout from the impending hurricane into FL and the hurricane that just with through a bunch of states including NC, to be as devastating as possible to all the people, for political gain. They want the Biden admin to look bad so it will help them in the Nov election. Just like Trump and gang had the Border bill killed in Congress becuase trump literally said that would help the other side.
Full response:
You know, moments of crisis, if nothing else, should really be the moment that anyone who calls themselves a leader says they’re gonna put politics aside and put the people first. People are in desperate need of support right now. And playing political games at this moment in these crisis situations, these are the height of the emergency situations. It’s just utterly irresponsible, and it is selfish, and it is about political gamesmanship instead of doing the job that you took an oath to do, which is to put the people first.
The scam is healthcare tied to your job. It’s a way to American companies to exploit the workers. People will be more willing to quit the bad jobs otherwise.
I am on the side that either we force the government to give us universal healthcare. Or we force the government to make it where health insurance companies have to pay for everything in full no matter what medical area it is. It shouldn't matter if it is mental health, vision, dental, regular healthcare, etc. The health insurance companies are fucking us over and over and over by making us pay to keep our health somewhat fine even though they are getting government help and we pay a health insurance bill every month. And health insurance companies should not be allowed to request more than $75 a month for health insurance as paying upwards of $500-$600+ a month to have any sort of good health insurance is a massive pile of bullshit.
There won't be a single health insurance company left in America if you pass these laws. It simply won't be profitable for them. The whole idea of an insurance company is to make a profit.
If you want price control, you need to have universal healthcare. As soon as you leave it to market forces, you're gonna get price gouged.
The whole idea of an insurance company is to make a profit.
Found the problem.
Yep, this is because insurance companies are essentially government sanctioned pyramid schemes, disguised as legitimate businesses.
Push comes to shove they claim they "manage risk" and want to help people, but the very nature of their business requires customer a being denied so they can even have the financial liquidity to cover customer b.
What’s the point of government and taxes if they don’t provide a public system for healthcare?! Americans are already paying for healthcare but some assholes keep spending it on tanks!
In a capitalist society it's mostly to pay for a police/military force to keep the people from the country/other countries in check and keep everything working in good shape for the billionaries to get as much profit/extract as much wealth of the workers as possible.
In a society made for the people though the purpose is indeed to materially improve people's lives in every way possible...
If Americans every get universal healthcare -- along with a higher minimum wage, rent control, affordable education, etc -- there is no going back. It's wild to realize that a lot of people are brainwashed into voting against their own good.
The naysayers state that we will all have to pay more in taxes if we have universal coverage. What they say is true, but it misses the point entirely. With universal coverage, the overall costs of hospitalization, medication and professional services will decrease, and so the overall cost to US society will be much lower. Unfortunately for the powers that be, their billion dollar paychecks will also decrease, and so instead we have patchy expensive coverage, and we have lobbyists.
You!

We all saw it with our own eyes. We saw the cops trying to stop it get beat, saw some of the cops opening the barricades right up. Watched the maniacs hanging effigies of some of the people inside. Climbing the walls and breaking the windows of our capitol.
All perfectly in line with the insanity and delusions Trump had been fomenting publicly for years.
There is no defense for Jan 6th, and anyone supporting Trump after that is not a patriot. Not sure what they are, but they do not love democracy, and they do not love the United States. They maybe love lynching perceived enemies, and they seem happy to be told who that is/should be from the most disgusting lecher they can find.
Imagine how much damage has been done to the country and democracy as conservative media and politicians have blatantly ignored these incredibly obvious criminal actions for the last 4 years. Imagine if they had reported facts or impeached him like they knew they should have. Instead, they courted the worst of America and brainwashed the good and decent conservatives as they completely abandoned their morals and principles in the pursuit of power.
Fox News host Neil Cavuto said Wednesday that a newly unsealed filing in the federal Jan. 6 case revealed former President Trump “resorted to crimes” to stay in office.
“It was in this newly unsealed court paper we’re learning that former President Trump resorted to crimes to cling to power after the 2020 election. We don’t know much more than that,” Cavuto said Wednesday on Fox News.
They have to dump Trump as fast as they possibly can or the republican party is dead. If they allow him to keep pulling the strings, then they might as well just make a new political party.
Reminds me of a former President’s infamous quote:
After another rambling speech in Georgia on Tuesday, Donald Trump took to Truth Social to pat himself on the back.
Except, he appeared to forget where he just had been.
A great day in Louisiana!” Trump posted around midnight, following his rally in Savannah, Georgia.
He then tried to correct his mistake, tweetingabout “internal polling in Louisiana” that showed him “winning the state by the largest margin.” (Sure, let’s see those polls!)
These people probably think Trump is going to suspend the constitution, install himself as president, hand out guns to all his supporters, and make it legal to take all the liberals’ possessions. These fucking people aren’t right in the head.
Trump literally said, "take the guns first, go through due process second."
And no, it's not out of context. He was responding to Pence who had just mentioned support for red flag laws saying, "Allow due process so no one’s rights are trampled, but the ability to go to court, obtain an order and then collect not only the firearms but any weapons."
And then Trump jumped in, "Or, Mike, take the firearms first, and then go to court."
He further explained, "I like taking the guns early, like in this crazy man’s case that just took place in Florida … to go to court would have taken a long time."
"Take the guns first, go through due process second."
Where were all the gun nuts when that happened? Usually if a democrat sneezes on a gun, they start sharing it all over, accompanied by slippery slope arguments.
But this they didn't want to talk about. Then two years later during the election, all my local gun nuts started sharing image macros of Biden and Harris with Trump's gun quote misattributed to them. And of course, they all got real worked up about those "crazy libs" in the comments.
Whoever the troll was that thought to do that, well played, it was genius.
If the Constitution is terminated, there is no restriction on guns anymore. There’s no guarantee of free speech, your home can be seized, you can be jailed without charges for as long as the jailer determines. It’s not really in our best interest to lose the protections offered by the Constitution.
It’s not enough for many anti-abortion stalwarts to ban the procedure in their state. They want to ban legal drugs designed to induce abortion. They want to surveil and block women traveling to other states to obtain an abortion. One of the most threatening dimensions of these programs is that they threaten to make doctors and other medical professionals — who might give counsel on or simply know about a woman’s plans to obtain an abortion — responsible for reporting her actions. If you visit your OB-GYN and discuss traveling to another state to get an abortion, does your OB have to report you to the local sheriff? It applies to third parties who might assist a woman either in traveling to get an abortion or getting FDA-approved medications to induce an abortion at home. The cases we’ve already seen range the gamut from sheriff’s departments wanting to pull medical and travel records for evidence of pregnancies that ended for unexplained reasons, gaps in menstruation, trips out of state that coincided with a pregnancy not brought to term.
All this from the self proclaimed protector of women.
Imagine raising your daughter in a country where her period is tracked by the government and then she gets shot in school by a gun that isn’t allowed to be tracked by the government. And it’s all because you voted for a reality gameshow host because Russian propaganda agents on your TV told you Haitian drag queens were eating dogs and performing transgender surgery on your kids at school.
2024 America.
On the one hand, asking people to wear a mask to avoid spreading a deadly disease around is just the worst form of trying to control people, on the other requiring women to report their menstrual cycles so the government can decide if you're hiding a pregnancy is just good policy.
During a Wednesday Newsmax interview, the conservative interviewer asked, "[Trump] wouldn't support monitoring pregnancies even if a state decided to do that?"
Miller replied, "Well, he's made it very clear that he's not gonna go and weigh in and try to push various states in how they want to go and set up their particular rules and restrictions. That's gonna be up to the states."
Conservative and Bulwark founder Charlie Sykes replied: "Oh!"
Talking Points Memo founder John Marshall commented: "Trump kingpin Jason Miller gives the thumbs up to states that want to set up full menstrual surveillance departments"
CNN aired a powerful montage of Donald Trump calling Kamala Harris a “fascist” multiple times after his running mate JD Vance blasted Democrats for using the same word to refer to the former president.
The montage began with a snippet from Vance’s Monday speech in Georgia. The Ohio Senator-turned-GOP vice presidential nominee called for Democrats to reduce the “ridiculous and inflammatory political rhetoric” days after an assassination attempt against Trump — the second in a matter of months.
JD Vance is campaigning against himself at this point.
What he meant was; no one ELSE should use the word.
The trump campaign can use all the racist, violent, inflammatory rhetoric they want. But, they are delicate flowers that need to be coddled and enabled at every turn, like giant drunken toddlers.
It's clear that conservatives think Trump should be able to say whatever he wants, and that his words have no consequences, but Democrats should only say nice things about Trump and the GOP
Maybe, just maybe, if someone don't tell lies, they will correct, what? On the other hand if someone is constantly telling lies, they will correct that person, constantly. And there weren't any audience in the debate, so...
Register to vote no fewer than 30 days before the election in which you wish to vote
Check your registration. Some states have purged voter rolls.
If you have questions or want to vote by mail contact your local election officials.
Make a plan for election day: check the location and hours of your polling place and be sure to bring along any required documents.
If you're voting by mail be sure to mail your ballot in ample time.
Lies pour out of his mouth every time he opens it. He's addicted to lying (and probably some sort of simulant). I honestly don't believe he can complete a paragraph without lying.
While former president Donald Trump hits the presidential campaign trail, the former first lady has largely been absent. Melania Trump did not attend her husband's criminal trial in New York and only showed up for the final night of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee in July.
When Trump and his entourage arrived in Philadelphia for the presidential debate, Melania was nowhere to be seen. Instead, a different woman was spotted disembarking from Trump's private jet: Florida's own far-right provocateur and one-time Republican congressional candidate, Laura Loomer. (She ran for Florida's 21st congressional district, which fittingly includes Mar-a-Lago).
Melania was 34 when she married Trump, she's now 54. Loomer is 31, you can fill in the rest where this is going.
Laura Loomer continually broke Florida election law by talking to voters within 150 feet of our polling place. She was running for a Congressional district in Palm Beach County (my district) and thought she actually had a chance against Lois Frankel (HA!).
She was walking up and down the line asking people who they are voting for and trying to hype up herself and Trump. I was about the 12th person in line and could hear her making her way to the front to talk to people.
When she got to me I said with gritted teeth under my mask, "Keep moving along, crazy." She said, "I just wanted to talk to you about your choice today." From out of nowhere, and despite living in FL for 8 years, my Midwest came out and busted out a, "Go on. GIT. GIIIT away from me."
When Donald Trump was asked about the concerns voiced by his Republican colleagues regarding his recent associations with far-right activist Laura Loomer, the former president stumbled to provide a concrete answer, instead calling her a “supporter” five times.
The question comes after Loomer, notorious for pushing outrageous conspiracy theories and racist rhetoric, joined Trump on his plane to Philadelphia ahead of his debate against Kamala Harris on Tuesday. She also attended the 9/11 memorial ceremony in New York — despite previously claiming that the terror attacks were an “inside job.” Their recent associations have prompted a few notable Trump allies to warn that he should distance himself from such a polarizing figure, especially as the election nears.
So Trump implying that Harris slept her way to the top was just projection?
He’s clearly having an affair and the evangelicals will vote for him because he’s such a devout Christian.
$10 that she also has an "unusual" amount of connections to Russia too.
Given the hate she’s getting from the MAGA community I’m surprised no one has started claiming she’s trans yet...
Several prominent members of Donald Trump's MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement are urging the former president to cut ties with controversial activist Laura Loomer, with one ally in Congress accusing the former Florida House candidate of making "appalling and extremely racist" remarks.
The anger came after Loomer was pictured with Trump at two 9/11 memorial events on Wednesday after she posted a racially charged diatribe aimed at Vice President Kamala Harris on X, formerly Twitter.
How ‘right’ do you have to be to be criticized by MAGA rightwing idiot MTG?
Loomer has been attached to Trump’s hip lately, and MAGA is blaming her for Trump going on rants at the debate about immigrants eating pets and other weird shit.
So now they are turning in her in hopes that it gets her away from Trump and he can appear “normal” again to non-MAGA voters.
She's getting bolder and is throwing out more attacks against other people in the GOP, and I this is a better indicator that she's having an affair or similar with Trump than the pictures. Maybe she feels untouchable and is flexing her power as Trump's favorite, picking fights and trying to increase her own influence in the ways conservatives do. She's trying to claim and wield some of Trump's power.
She's nuts and needs to go away. But it's great for popcorn time, watching her thrash around in the body of the GOP like a parasite that made friends with the brain so it won't remove her.
