Treasury Secretary Admits Trump’s Tariffs Are Paid by Americans
Today just after midnight, steep retaliatory tariffs President Donald Trump slapped on dozens of countries went into effect. “IT’S MIDNIGHT!!! BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN TARIFFS ARE NOW FLOWING INTO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!” the president wrote on Truth Social minutes before the levies snapped into effect.
Scott Bessent acknowledged that the “billions” in tariffs the president says are flowing “into” the U.S. are footed by importers, who can pass the cost onto consumers.
The fact that there are millions of absolute morons that believe him is the problem. The fact that our President is flat out lying to people, is another problem.
If you watched the clip, he tried first to answer several other questions that weren't asked, tapdancing around all of it, and making pre-excuses.
But the fact is, when Trump says tariffs have brought in hundreds of billions of dollars to this country, it's a LIE. That money was ALREADY HERE. It was paid by AMERICAN businesses to the government (also known as a tax).
Bessent (who knows better) jumps ahead to say that foreign companies may lower prices to compensate - he omits that that would necessarily also lower tariff revenue. He says companies may absorb the tariff in whole or part and not pass it on to consumers - he omits that this necessarily means eating into their profits. The profits of U.S. companies.
It's a scam. It's a massive tax hike that lands mostly on the working class. And Bessent of all people ABSOLUTELY knows this.
Everyone around Trump's circle knows that tariffs are a tax on the America people. You can tell by the way they dance around acknowledging it.
The only person who I question whether knows it or not is Dummy Don. He's either 1) lying or 2) truly does not understand tariffs. I can't tell which it is.
What is it paying for? That is what I am curious about at this point. Where is the money going and what effect is it having? What is it for? There has never been a plan given for what the extra cash in the Treasury is doing. Is it to pay off the national debt, which is held by the countries the tariffs apply to? That doesn't make sense.
Based on the 'big beautiful' bill, it's going to tax cuts for billionaires and to ICE.
