Ron DeSantis Would Kill Democracy Slowly and Methodically
During the Donald Trump era, democracy itself has become the preeminent question of American politics. Yet Trump himself has played a paradoxical role in this development. While his overtly authoritarian personality brought the democracy question to the fore, the sheer grossness of his behavior also served to blot out the deeper ideological causes of the rift. As Trump eventually fades from the scene — perhaps overtaken by Ron DeSantis — the democracy question, far from disappearing, might instead sharpen.
Generally these things are slow, then sudden. So people are in denial it's happening until, whaddaya know, there's a Reichstag fire.
Republicans seem poised to go guns a blazing on our constitution the first chance they get.

US government has finally and completely been handed over to a 5 judge majority on the supreme court. They are the latest salvo in an on going war between self governance and humanities apparent instinct to follow "Great Men". It'll be interesting to see if majority rule ever returns.
The main upshots of this are that it seems less and less likely that government will ever be able to do anything progressive ever again. On the block are civil rights, women's rights, bodily autonomy, rule of law, and other nice things like built infrastructure, product safety, climate change and more.
